Have you ever heard of co-washing? It’s a term that has been gaining popularity recently in the hair care industry. Co-washing, short for “conditioner washing,” is the process of washing your hair with conditioner instead of traditional shampoo. This may seem strange at first, but there are a lot of benefits to co-washing that you should consider. Here are just a few reasons why you might want to skip the shampoo and start co-washing.
It’s Gentler for Your Hair
Shampoo can be harsh on your hair, stripping away its natural oils and leaving it dry and damaged. Co-washing, on the other hand, is gentler on your hair because you’re using a conditioning product instead of a product that is designed to remove oil and build-up. This can help prevent breakage and keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. Plus, it’s a great way for fine hair to have hydration without weighing it down.
It’s Great for Curly Hair
If you have curly hair, you already know that it can be a challenge to keep it looking healthy and defined. Co-washing can be particularly beneficial for those with curly hair because it helps to keep strands moisturized and defined without weighing them down. This can help reduce frizz and give you more defined curls.
Balance an Oily Scalp
Usually with oily scalps we hear to stay away from moisture and hydrating products. Resulting in using stripping shampoos packed with heavy detergents to remove as much oil as possible. But doing this, creates a ripple effect of a constant over active sebum production in the scalp. Using a co-wash into the routine on an alternating routine between shampoo day, promotes a balanced scalp. The clients that come to me with large yellow flakes and heavy oil build up look at me sideways when I suggest this product into their routines. And all of them, now have a balanced scalp. They wash their hair because they want to, not because they need to wash or they look greasy. My all time favourite co-wash so far, is of course Hairstory’s New Wash.

Tips for Co-Washing
If you’re ready to give co-washing a try, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Start with a co-washing product that is specifically designed for this purpose. Look for a product that is sulfate-free and made with natural ingredients.
Massage the co-wash into your hair and scalp, focusing on the roots.
Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair while you’re washing it. Rinse well to remove any excess product.
My clients usually do a co-wash, on alternating wash days between their shampoo.
Conclusion…
Co-washing can be a great way to keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and defined without using harsh shampoos. With the right products and techniques, you can enjoy the benefits of co-washing and achieve the hair of your dreams. Your hair (and the planet) will thank you.
