Hair loss is a common problem that can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, stress, and hormonal changes. However, one often overlooked reason for hair loss is hard water.
Hard water contains high levels of minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. While it is not harmful to human health, exposure to hard water can lead to several issues related to hair and scalp health, including hair loss.
One of the major issues with hard water is that it can cause a buildup of minerals on the scalp, which can lead to clogged hair follicles. When hair follicles are clogged, it can be difficult for hair to grow and thrive, leading to hair thinning and hair loss over time.
Additionally, hard water can cause the scalp to become dry and itchy, which can exacerbate hair loss. This is because a dry and itchy scalp can lead to scratching and further damage to hair follicles, making hair loss even worse.
It can also contribute to hair damage. The minerals in hard water can cause hair to become dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage.
Over time, exposure to hard water can cause hair to become dull and lifeless, making it difficult to manage and style. Additionally, hard water can cause colour-treated hair to fade more quickly, leading to more frequent colour touch-ups and potential damage to the hair.
But there is hope!
If hard water is causing hair loss or damage, there are several solutions that can help. One option is to install a water softener, which is a device that removes the minerals from hard water before it enters your home. My favourite will be linked at the bottom!
Another option is to use a clarifying shampoo, which can help remove mineral buildup from the hair and scalp. My favourite is Suna by Reverie. The ingredients are gentle yet effect, great for fragile, fine and curly hair. Whether you’re sitting dealing with an oily scalp or a dry one… your pH is off balance. Suna soothes the scalp with a pH of 5.3-5.5 (hair & scalp are happiest between 4.5-5.5). A lot of clarifying shampoos are extremely harsh to the hair and strips way too much oil leaving the scalp feeling tight, and itchy. Suna doesn’t do that, and intended to be used weekly, also linked for you below.
In conclusion, hair loss can be a frustrating issue to deal with, but it’s important to consider all potential factors that may be contributing to the problem. Taking steps to treat hard water, such as installing a water softener or using proper shampoos, you can help prevent further hair loss and improve the overall health and appearance of your hair.
